Symposium: Photography and the Artist’s Book

There is a renewed interest in the relationship of photography and the artist’s book as both works of art and as alternative sites for exhibition and dissemination. There is also a notable expansion in the activities of self-publication by photographers and artists who use the photograph. Further to this, the theorising of the photographic essay and notions of ‘conceptual documentary’ have become important areas of discourse for those practitioners and theorists who are interested in working with the photograph in book form (Stimson, 2006 and Miles, 2010).
This symposium, which will precede the 6th Manchester Artist’s Book Fair, aims to bring together theorists and practitioners in order to more fully explore the issues raised by the relationship of photography and the artist’s book. Abstracts are invited for critical and/or creative papers that might respond to (but are not limited to) the following areas:
- photography and the artist’s book or ‘bookwork’
- the photographic essay
- the photo-novel and other narrative forms
- sequence, seriality and typology
- audience: zines, multiples and limited editions
